Memorial history

The Memorial to Zhou Enlai and Deng Yingchao was called The Exhibition Hall of Comrade Zhou Enlai’s revolutionary activities in Tianjin in his youth previously (simply called “Youth Memorial”). After Zhou Enlai passed away in 1976, the memorial was built by Tianjin Committee and Government in the East Building in Nankai Middle School, where Zhou Enlai was a young student, to memorialize his great achievement. This Memorial was opened on 5th Mar, 1978. Ye Jianying, previous chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, signed the plaque over the Museum’s entrance way. That memorial covered an area of 1386 square meters, and the building acreage was 960 square meters.

Youth Memorial included No. 4 East classroom and the Physical and chemical lab where Zhou Enlai had classes. The Museum was divided into four parts: “Middle school time”, “Study in Japan”, “‘May 4th’ Movement”, and “Life in Europe”.

The whole display hall displayed about 400 pictures, historical relics and documents, including pictures of Zhou Enlai in the “May 4th ” movement, his middle school time and his newspapers during that period.

In 20 years, Youth Memorial received about 2 million visitors. In 1992, it was renamed the “TianJin Youth Education Center”; in 1994, it’s name was again changed to “TianJin Patriotism Education Center”. In 1995, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) awarded it “International Science and Peace Contribution” prize.

Zhou Enlai and Deng Yingchao are great proletariat revolutionaries, firm Marxists, and extraordinary leaders. They devoted their lives to the Chinese people’s liberation and the building of a new China. They threw themselves into Communist Party work. Through their work and dedication, they won the respect and love of the whole party and all nationalities.

Zhou Enlai and Deng Yingchao spent their youth in TianJin. They met and fell in love here, and they accompanied each other on the path of China’s revolution. They came to TianJin many times to advise Tianjin’s development. They considered TianJin as their second home. After their passing, the Tianjin Committee and Government made a plan to build a memorial for Zhou Enlai and Deng Yingchao to memorialize their achievement and contribution, a plan which was then approved by the Central Government in Beijing. The construction of the Memorial was done with great care and respect. It was a great honor that President Jiang Zemin signed the plaque over the memorial’s entrance way. During construction time, Li Peng, a previous Prime Minister and Li Ruihuan the mayor of Tianjin, visited the construction site. The building of the Memorial to Zhou Enlai and Deng Yingchao fulfills the wishes of TianJin’s people. The total investment for this Memorial is ¥78 million, and the contributions from Tianjin is ¥12 million. The construction of the Memorial started on December 23rd , 1996, and with people’s passion overcoming any construction difficulties, it took only one year and four months to finish land construction and display work. On Feb 28th ,1998, a day before the 100th Anniversary of Zhou Enlai’s birth , the Memorial was opened to the public. This is the first time there has been a memorial in China for two politicians who were also husband and wife. It is not only playing an important role of patriotism education, but also a modern cultural facility in TianJin.

The previous Zhou Enlai youth memorial setting was merged into the Memorial to Zhou Enlai and Deng Yingchao, and the Youth Memorial was transferred to NanKai Middle School.
